Entry is NPR 1,000 for foreign nationals, valid for the day. Two hours covers it properly. Come at 07:00, before the tour groups and while the square is still being used by the people who live around it.
The entry fee and the ticket trick#
The NPR 1,000 ticket is day-valid, but at the ticket office you can have it converted free to a visitor pass covering the length of your visa. If you are in Kathmandu for more than two days and expect to pass through the square again, take the pass — bring your passport and a photo.
A two-hour walking route#
Kumari Ghar
The living goddess's residence, and the best-preserved courtyard carving in the square. She appears at a window for a few minutes, unpredictably.
Hanuman Dhoka and the Nasal Chowk courtyards
The old royal palace. Reconstruction after 2015 is still visible, which makes it a better lesson in how these buildings are made than an intact one.
Jagannath and Shiva-Parvati temples
Street level, fifteen minutes, and where most of the woodwork detail is.
Maju Deval plinth
Rebuilt and now the square's best vantage point. Sit, and watch the square work.
During Dashain the square is at its busiest, and Taleju temple opens for its single day of the year.
Getting there and when to go#
Walk from Thamel in 20 minutes down Jhochhen. Taxis will charge NPR 300–400 for the same trip in traffic that is often slower. Arrive at 07:00 for the morning puja, or after 16:30 for low light — midday is both hot and crowded.
Frequently asked questions
Is Durbar Square worth the entry fee?
Yes, for two hours and with the visa-length pass. If you only have one day in Kathmandu and must choose, Patan Durbar Square is smaller, quieter and better preserved for the same money.
Do I need a guide?
Licensed guides wait at the ticket office and charge NPR 1,500–2,500 for an hour. Worth it here, because almost nothing in the square is labelled.
